How to be compatible with multiple Wet Wipe sizes on the Double-Servo Robotic Case Packer ?

In the first half of the year, Techflow delivered an automatic Double-servo Robotic-arm Case packaging line for wet wipes to European customers. Due to the multiple product specifications of our clients (6 types), it is a challenge for our designers to use one set of gripper that are compatible with multiple specifications.

At first, based on the arrangement of the wet wipes and considering compatibility with multiple specifications, we designed a set of pneumatic gripper with clamp plates on both sides, and the gripping surface was supplemented with sponge.

But when the customer came for FAT testing, there were many problems with the gripper, such as wet wipes falling off during the grabbing process, excessive clamping force causing wet wipes to break, and occasional scratches on the wet wipes on both sides of the gripper. 

In order to thoroughly solve these problems, we invited customers to discuss in detail with technicians at the exhibition. We overturned the initial design concept and changed the starting clamp fixture to a high adhesion sponge vacuum suction cup, and embedded a vacuum generating device that enhances vacuum gripping force into the fixture slot. This not only increases the adsorption force, but also eliminates the need for a starting clamp, avoiding the probability of scratching and damaging the product during the grabbing and placing process. At the same time, the vacuum sponge is lengthened and thickened, which can be compatible with multiple customer specifications at the same time. When switching products, there is no need to adjust any mechanical parts on the fixture. After replacing the fixture with a new one, the customer passed the FAT acceptance with satisfaction. After the acceptance of this project, we have accumulated valuable experience in packaging products similar to wet wipes and wet wipe shapes, especially in ensuring compatibility with multiple specifications of wet wipes during packaging.
